In consulting with those on a gluten free diet, I realize that many of you are not aware of some hidden sources of gluten beyond the obvious….ie….breads, cakes, cereals.  I myself was surprised to learn  all the  places where gluten can lurk, and it just doesn’t have to be in sources of food.  Gluten can show up in some postage stamps, medications, vitamins and even in make up and chap stick. I had a client on a gluten free diet who was advised to take “Bean-O” to aid her in digestion by her gastro doc.  She handed me the bottle and sure enough, one of the ingredients listed was wheat !!

Whoever thought that pickles could have gluten, but some do.  Depending on the pickling process, malt vinegar may be in your pickle jar, and malt vinegar is made from barley, a gluten source.  Choose a brand that uses “corn-based” vinegar for your gluten free pickle.

Check your brand of veggie burgers for gluten.  Unfortunately many do contain gluten.  Your salad dressing may have a thickening agent which could contain gluten.  Potato chips can also have processed flavorings that may contain gluten.  And  sorry to report that red licorice may also be made with gluten as well as hot dogs.  (although I don’t recommend eating a hot dog, gluten free or not ) !!

Most people know that soy sauce may contain gluten, but not many realize that bouillon cubes may have gluten as well as some gravies, french fries and even some self basting turkeys.

Bottom line here is that if you are on a gluten free diet,  you should read ingredient labels even for foods that don’t seem like obvious sources of gluten.  Gluten is ubiquitous in our food and other products.  The good news though is that there are many gluten free options to chose from.  It might  take a call to the manufacturer to verify however.
