I have always believed that over time, our brain can learn to crave different, (i.e.healthier) foods.  My initial basis for this belief was my study of one….Me!!  As many of you know, I love to eat, and I eat often.  However I am very particular about what I choose to eat.  Not only does the food need to be nutritious, but it needs to taste good  because let’s face it, we want to enjoy what we eat.

Over the years, as I try to digest (no pun intended)  the always changing nutritional research out there, I have come up with ways to make nutritious food be appealing to me, and in turn my clients, who in turn become believers based on their own experience.  But finally now, a study has been published online in “Research & Diabetes” that the brain, indeed, can learn to crave better food.

The researchers observed through MRI imaging, the section of the brain that is associated with reward functions in obese study participants. The subjects were split into two groups….one group was part of a dietary intervention, and the other group received no such dietary intervention.  The dietary intervention for the first group, was based on a low-calorie, low glycemic diet with high fiber fruits and vegetables.  All participants were shown pictures of both low and hight calorie foods while their brains were being scanned.  Over time, the group that received the dietary intervention, exhibited more brain pleasure for the low calorie foods & less for the higher caloric foods. They also lost more weight than the control group. The authors state that, “this study is among the first to demonstrate alterations in food cravings & preferences.”

Actually, they didn’t need to go to the trouble to conduct this study….they could have just asked me!!!  Let me help you alter your brain cravings & preferences in order to Nourish Your Wellness in the new year!!
