If you are a woman over 40, you are probably wondering why your belly is getting bigger, even though you are not eating anymore than you used to.  Welcome to middle age and meet your “menopot,” and its sneaky little friend, “muffin top.” The weight gain starts off small, but as a woman enters the peri-menopausal years and her hormone levels begin to decline, her metabolism also starts to slow. With these changes  women may also experience sleep disturbances & emotional changes including depression and anxiety. Besides your favorite pair of jeans no longer fitting, the more important issue is that the extra fat in your middle can increase the incidence of heart disease,  Type 2 diabetes, and a host of other issues.

But ladies, and the men who love them, please don’t despair. We can fight the “menopot,” with several different strategies. Change your steady state cardio workouts to an interval based workout which has been shown to decrease belly fat more effectively.  Weight training is crucial in order to increase your lean body mass which will also increase your daily caloric burn. And of course, a healthy, nourishing way  of eating is key, including incorporating plenty of fiber, calcium, vitamin D and the heart healthy mono-unsaturated fats (MUFAs) in your daily food intake.  And please, don’t starve yourselves;  don’t miss any meals and don’t ever go more than 3 hours without eating.  A starved middle aged woman, is an undisciplined person capable of putting anything in her mouth!!  (I know, I’ve been there).
